*Some clients may have a diagnosable mental illness such as Major Depressive disorder. A diagnosis can help us understand what a person might be experiencing as a cluster of symptoms. Once we have an insight into the symptoms, we can work through ways of alleviating these with evidence-based treatment. Sometimes this will be in conjunction with medication prescribed by a GP or psychiatrist. A diagnosis can be helpful to some people, as it can give insight and acceptance to what they may be experiencing, but not so helpful for others, as they may feel that a diagnosis labels them, and that they may not be able to change. More than anything, people are unique individuals. As a therapist, Mark works collaboratively to validate the client’s position on whether or not they would find a diagnosis helpful to them in understanding their own journey , and therapy is always targeted to the benefit of the client, with the client’s best interest at heart.
